About The Friends of Edna Maternity Hospital
The organization funds the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Somaliland and supports their mission to improve maternal and infant health care. Somaliland’s health care system was utterly destroyed by the civil war there which ended in 1992. But even before the war, maternal health care was abysmal, as it is throughout the Horn of Africa. Therefore, Somaliland’s maternal death rate was among the highest in the world. The Hospital was created to train fully-qualified health care professionals and to provide obstetric and neonatal care where there was none.
The Hospital also trains and dispatches midwives throughout the country and fights the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which is endemic throughout the region. Last year a United Nations study concluded that Edna Adan’s work had brought down the maternal death rate at the hospital by over 70% and, through her nursing school, by 50% in the country at large.
This year, Edna opened a new operating theater that is dedicated especially to fistula repair – fistula being the one of the most prevalent health care issues plaguing women in the Horn of Africa because of nearly universal FGM.
The Friends of Edna Maternity Hospital is registered in the state of Minnesota. Donations are 100% tax deductible. For more information, visit www.ednahospital.org
